How did this new album and overall concept for it come about, and what are your ultimate goals with it?

Little Red Box is about the gift of love and in many ways it's autobiographical. The songs are about things that were going on in my life while I was writing it. Ultimately, I want the world to hear it! I think it's the best music I've written, to date, and I believe once you hear it, you'll love it!

Who would you say has been the single biggest influence in your life in getting you to where you are now in your career?

My Mother…without her allowing and encouraging me to do my thing, I wouldn't be who I am today. She had the philosophy of…I don't care what you do, be the best that you can be at it…as long as it's legal! Haha! really she said that!

Who are some of your current favorite artists, Smooth Jazz or otherwise?

I have very eclectic musical tastes but I really dig Kem, Black Dub, Bruno Mars, Emili Sandé, Faith Hill and of course my friends, saxophonist Jeanette Harris and pianist Laura Sullivan!

What would you define as the most life-changing event so far in your musical career?

Recording my current album Little Red Box! Before that it would be getting the percussionist gig with R&B/Funk legends ConFunkShun. I still tour/play with them, while continuing to create and promote my own music.

What’s your favorite charity or cause you work for, and why?

I currently work with an organization called the Keep Music Rockin' Foundation. They raise money to keep the music programs going in the San Leandro Unified School District, through fund raising efforts like concerts, golf tournaments etc… They also have musicians and vocalists like myself, Carlos Santana, Lenny Williams, Pete Escovedo and Sheila E., and many others who come in and do music clinics with the kids.

We've cut back on the Arts in schools, and anything I can do to help keep it going, I want to do. When I was a kid, music helped me to become who I am today and it would be a great disservice to the world if our kids aren't introduced to, not just music, but the Arts in general.

I also donate to local Food Banks because, unfortunately they are necessary for some people to survive and if and when I can, I donate to them. Pay it forward!

What aspect of the creative process, from concept to market, do you personally find to be the most rewarding?

I am a Songwriter, so it's the songwriting that does it for me. I love the creative process. It can be challenging sometimes, when it seems the inspiration isn't there but when it happens…it's magic!
